A Bed of Thorns and Roses is like a gothic fairytale, a masterful, emotional re-telling of Beauty and the Beast. A tale of two people scarred and broken, who find love and acceptance in each other's arms.
Jonathan Nashe has grown up in a life of privilege. The sole heir to a vast fortune, he has never known what it's like to go without the simplest comforts. A tragic fire in his childhood has left Jonathan scarred and jaded. He allows only one person, his doctor and friend, to see him. All others are kept away and he lives a life of research and solitude. When his painstaking work becomes too much for his wounded body, he is coerced into hiring a secretary.
Little does Jonathan know that that secretary is a woman, and a beautiful woman at that. Isabelle Tate's family is in poor circumstance. When the offer is presented to her, she can think of nothing more than helping her younger sister escape her fate. She is drawn to her mysterious employer, hidden in the shadows as he is. But she has secrets of her own, shameful things she would never want him to find out.
This story is at once both tragic, and painfully sweet. There are so many heartbreaking obstacles that stand between these two lovers, but you are never without the sense that somehow they will overcome them. Jonathan is everything a good beast should be: brutish, commanding, and strangely vulnerable. Isabelle is a terrific beauty: pretty, kind, patient and intelligent.
The ending is poignant and perfect, and left tears in my eyes. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a fairy tale, for a beautiful story of love.
