Approaching his 500th birthday has caused Connor Buchanan to reflect. His conclusion? He has a heart of ice and is just fine with that. Love is for everyone else, but certainly not for him. History has shown him the price of love is just too steep.

Marielle is a kind hearted, well intentioned angel who has disobeyed one too many times. Cast out of heaven, she is given a mortal body. Connor has vowed to protect her, but who will protect her from him? Confused by these new human feelings, Marielle longs to rejoin her fellow angels. But when the time comes, will she be able to leave behind the vampire she’s falling for?

Connor Buchanan has a reputation as an old, grouchy Vamp. He has watched his friends fall like dominos, in love. Now there are couples everywhere, and babies on the way… He knows that is not the life for him.. until he meets Marielle. Sure he believes her to be a Malcontent at first, but that doesn’t stop him from admiring her beauty.

When Marielle is cast out of heaven, her wings taken and in the form of a human body, it takes everything she has not to despair. She misses her fellow angels and the sounds of the heavenly host in her ears. She misses the freedom of flight and the joy of communion. She will do anything to be forgiven and taken back into the fold.

Connor offers Marielle his protection from the demon trying to recruit her to Hell. He realizes just how lonely he has been when he has to face the prospect of losing her.

This book has become one of my favorites by Kerrelyn Sparks. Here is a hero who thinks himself irredeemable and a heroine who falls in with his goodness almost at first sight. There are some great sub plots, which I can’t really mention as they are spoilerish. I truly came to care about Marielle and her quest for forgiveness. And Connor? He’s always seemed like a stiff SOB, but seeing his back story and the way he cares for Marielle gives you a new appreciation for this Vamp. The ending was truly shocking, and I cannot wait to read the next book to see how the good guys will come out on top.

Gregori’s story is next in Sexiest Vampire Alive, available September 27th, 2011.
