Tundra 37
by Aubrie Dionne

Published February 7, 2012 by Entangled Publishing

Gemme is a hi-tech matchmaker who pairs the next generation of Lifers aboard the Expedition, a deep space transport vessel destined for Paradise 18. When the identity of her lifemate pops up on her screen, she's shocked that he's the achingly gorgeous and highly sought after Lieutenant Miles Brentwood, a man oblivious to her existence. Believing everyone will think she contrived the match, she erases it from the computer's memory. Just as comets pummel the ship and destroy the pairing system forever. With the Expedition disabled, the colonists must crash land on the barren ice world of Tundra 37 where Gemme is reassigned to an exploratory mission, led by Lieutenant Brentwood. Only in the frozen tundra does she understand the shape of his heart and why the computer has entwined their destinies.

Aubrie Dionne’s second installment in the New Dawn series, Tundra 37 is a fast paced futuristic journey into the unknown.  Aubrie’s use of flashbacks gives insight into the motives of the characters as well as a solid understanding of the back story.  Life on Earth is dying and the only hope for human survival are huge spaceships that will travel to predetermined planets to colonize. The Expedition is one of the ships and being controlled by twin seers who are physically linked to the computer mainframe.

Gemme Renier’s life has been spent on the ship, Expedition. She is the Matchmaker, a position that allows her final say on the couplings that the computer has analyzed and determined would be appropriate genetic mates.  All that changes when the Expedition encounters a comet storm.  The twin Seers who have controlled the ship for over a hundred years must alter course and crash land on the frozen arctic Tundra 37.  With her life’s work destroyed Gemme is placed on a team tasked with finding a fuel source to keep the Expedition running while they colonize the planet. Lieutenant Miles Brentwood commands the team, the very Lieutenant that the computer had paired her with before the crash.  Their journey will reveal more than Gemme ever imagined.

Miles Brentwood is on a mission to save the passengers of the Expedition but the Seers have given him a second task. During their journey they acquired a mysterious orb, an orb that entices you to remember.  The Seers have sensed a second orb on Tundra 37 and Miles must retrieve it and return it to the ship.  Miles is drawn to Gemme from the moment he sees her and their journey reveals to him just how special this woman really is.  The mysterious orb draws them in and they must struggle to free themselves from their memories. He returns to the Expedition with both missions accomplished but he senses the danger of the second orb. Will the Seers stop at nothing to become one with the orb?

Tundra 37 is interesting and the characters are engaging but I did find the flashbacks at times to be a distraction from the plot.  There were also several inconsistencies in the storyline but all in all it was a good read.
